MEMORYlane: Rev. Loh Hong Yiong

Rev Loh, a sincere loving man without anger, stays in my heart forever and ever.

From the first time we met to the one thousand and oneth (1001th), many good memories stay floating in my brains. I treasure everything he had done for me and for others. For a total of 55 years we always prayed together. Tons of good things I would like to tell of him. Let me briefly name a few of them.

1. We met in the Methodist Theological School, Sibu in January 1959 as new students. There were 5 students in the new class, two girls and three boys. We were the 5th batch of graduates since the School opened. We, three boys, lived in the same dorm for all the school years while the girls lived in the girls’ dorm. We graduated in December 1962. The long years in the MTS mingled our blood together, and we became brothers and partners in God’s kingdom.

2. Following our graduation, Rev Loh was appointed as the Youth Directorof the Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference gearing up the youth program for the Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) while I was appointed to serve the Ibans in different regions. After serving as Youth Director for several years, he was then appointed to serve in various churches until his retirement. Though retiring from full time church ministry, he continued actively, participating in local church ministries. He was a great assistant to the local church pastor.

3. For 55 years, I have never seen him get carried away emotionally by anger. When he was angry he would keep in his silence with while maintaining a smiling face. He was a person giving who gave his time to people whenever people needed help. He was filled with dynamic power. On a hot sweating day, or a moment of heavy downpour moment, he would rush on his motorbike to meet people’s needs.

4. Last 28th December (a couple of months ago) we held hands praying and submitting ourselves to the loving Lord Jesus. It was our 1000th time meeting with each other. With smile on his face, we bid bade “Goodbye”.

I know he is travelling to somewhere that the Risen Lord Jesus is leading him. With FAITH, HOPE and LOVE, we will meet again sometime later. As the loving Lord Jesus said, “whoever believes in Him, where He is and all will be there.”

To dear Mrs Loh, children and familes, relatives and friends, may the Risen Lord Jesus Christ comfort you and grant you peace.
