MY son Ryan is six this year. He was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth.
Compared to his age group, he could not do what they could accomplish. He could not roll over or sit at eight months, so I brought him to the hospital to learn how to help him through physiotherapy and other aids. It took him a long while before he could turn and sit and walk. In 2013, through the introduction of the therapist, I brought Ryan to the Methodist Care Centre. Here, he went through a series of proper learning programmes and he made progress.
At the Centre, he went through all his emotions from tears to joy, from rejection to acceptance. The teachers were very patient with him until he graduated in 2017. He has indeed improved a lot after coming to the Centre. He can now eat and drink by himself. Before this he always relied on me or the teacher. The adults had to help him in big or small matters. At present he is very independent. He has improved his hand and eye coordination as well. He can thread beads, play with blocks, do colouring, throw a ball, and even carry his own school bag. He can eat with a spoon. Besides that he can also tidy up after playing. At home, he is able to help me doing little chores. The outcome is satisfying and all the changes have been a tremendous breakthrough for him.
Making many Friends
Before going to the Centre, Ryan only drank milk every day, but now he can eat porridge and some other solid food, such as cakes and bread. At present he can also make some sounds to indicate his needs and sing a little by imitating.
By the arrangement of the Centre Ryan has enrolled in Sing Ann Kindergarten in 2016. He has greatly advanced and is more independent now. He has adapted to the learning environment without my company (at the Centre I needed to be with him).
The teachers and classmates are very caring. They all love him and are willing to help him. He has made many friends in school and is enjoying all sorts of activities. The school has provided a friendly environment to help him grow.
I am very grateful to the Centre and the teachers and the therapy staff. Thank you all for your care and love for my son.
